Rivanna Trails

Events

Trail maintenance work parties occur the second Saturday of each month from 9:00-12:00. 

Our gathering point for work parties is at the RTF equipment shed at 2030 Morton Drive, near the Meadowcreek Gardens and behind Bodo's and the English Inn (see map). We usually meet at the tool shed at 8:45 and carpool to the work site, but contact the work party leader if you want to go directly to the project or plan on being late.

We have tools, but bring shears or clippers if you have them. Everyone is welcome! We are happy to have groups participate in our work parties, but please contact us ahead of time so that we can plan accordingly.

  • Special Work Party

    The Charlottesville Area Trail Runners (CATs) is leading a special work party this Sunday, September 6, to spruce up the new trail segment between Fontaine Ave and Stribling Ave Ext and the spur loop around the Virginia Forestry Building. We'll be cutting back the vegetation from the trail and removing debris, getting everything in top condition for Loop de'Ville.

    Meet at the RTF Tool Shed at 2030 Morton Drive. at 8:30 AM. We will gather tools, head to the work site, and finish at about 11:00 AM. Alternatively, you can meet us directly at the work site at the Forestry Building, but if you plan to go directly to the site, please text Walt (864-985-2960) so we can be sure to bring enough tools.

    Please wear gloves and clothing suitable for the conditions - shorts may not be the best if using a weed trimmer. We will have tools you can use and gloves for those who need them, but if you bring your own (e.g., hand clippers, long-handled loppers, saw), label them with your name.

    ***Please sign up here so CATs will have an idea of how many people are coming. You don't need to be a CATs member to lend a hand, we'd love to see you out there!

  • Loop de'Ville 2026

    Join us on Sunday, September 27, for Loop de'Ville, our annual celebration of the Rivanna Trail! We'll have a group hike of the entire 21-mile loop, bike rides and runs, and family-friendly events.

  • Heyward Forest Guided Hike

    Join a hiking tour with Charlottesville Parks and Recreation staff and get an introduction to new trails on the Heyward Community Forest property, adjacent to Ragged Mountain Natural Area. Learn about the natural history of this relatively new addition to the park system while learning to identify vegetation and wildlife habitat. The hike takes place on natural surface trails and covers about 2 miles with some hilly climbs.

    Meeting Location: 1730 Reservoir Road - Parking area is the gravel parking lot on the right with a red "Heyward Community Forest" sign (if you find yourself on top of a big gravel hill overlooking the reservoir, you've gone too far!) The parking lot is crowded due to construction along Reservoir Road and interest from local bike clubs, so we strongly suggest arriving early.

    On the third Saturday of every month, we host a guided walk along a section of the Rivanna Trail. Over the course of the year, we will cover the entire RT.
