Rivanna Trails

Events

Trail maintenance work parties occur the second Saturday of each month from 9:00-12:00.

Our gathering point for work parties is at the RTF equipment shed at 2030 Morton Drive, near the Meadowcreek Gardens and behind Bodo's and the English Inn (see map). We usually meet at the tool shed at 8:45 and carpool to the work site, but contact the work party leader if you want to go directly to the project or plan on being late.

We have tools, but bring shears or clippers if you have them. Everyone is welcome! We are happy to have groups participate in our work parties, but please contact us ahead of time so that we can plan accordingly.

General questions? Contact us at info@rivannatrails.org.

Join us for our annual hike around the City on the Rivanna Trail! September 24 is National Public Lands day, and to celebrate the Rivanna Trail's 30th anniversary we have a full weekend of events planned. We have a limited number of free tickets to Saturday's Rivanna Roots concert available to Full Hike participants - select the "Full Hike + Rivanna Roots" option if you wish to attend the concert afterwards.

In addition to a full loop hike, we're offering a family-friendly short walk, cycling and running options, and other special events. (Check the event overview for details of the other trail options and events.)

    • Distance: ~ 20 miles.
    • Hiking time: approximately 9 hours. This is variable due to rest stops and hiking speeds. We are not out to set any time record, but will keep a steady pace.
    • We hike around the City in a counterclockwise direction, using road walks and detours where necessary.
    • Start: The Rivanna River Company is located behind the Pie Chest & Lone Light Coffee (1518 E High St). Parking is available along Riverdale Drive and in the Burnley-Moran Elementary school parking lot, across High Street from our meeting point (map below). We leave from the RTF tent promptly at 8:00AM.
    • Finish: We'll end at the Rivanna River Company about 5:00, in time for the Rivanna Roots concert. The hike is free, but admission to the concert is $12 in advance or $15 on-site -- but we will comp admission for the first 25 people who register for the full hike! Local beer, wine, and food trucks will be on-site starting at 5:00, with the concert beginning at 6:00.
    • What to bring: boots or sturdy shoes; clothes appropriate for “urban wilderness” hiking and for weather conditions; stream crossing shoes or sandals; water; snacks; personal needs. There are a number of rock-hops and smaller streams to cross, so participants may want to bring a pair of water-safe shoes or sandals.
    • Important note: This is a strenuous hike--not technically difficult, but it's a long day. We will have a number of volunteers in our hiking group, and over the course of the day may fall into faster and slower groups, but assess your endurance and break in your boots before the hike day.
    • By registering for this hike, you:

      • Acknowledge having read the above hike description.
      • Acknowledge inherent risks, hazards, and dangers of this activity.
      • ŸAssume and accept any and all risks associated with participation.
      • ŸAttest that your physical and mental health are adequate for safe participation.
    • How to participate: No cost. Just register so we’ll know to expect you.
    • We'll send a final confirmation to registrants the week before the hike.

We have a limited number of free tickets to Saturday's Rivanna Roots concert available to Full Hike participants - select the "Full Loop Run + Rivanna Roots" option if you wish to attend the concert afterwards.

In addition to this run of the full loop, we're offering a shorter run on Sunday, a hike of the entire loop, a family-friendly short walk, and a couple cycling options, as well as other special events. (Check the event overview for details of the other trail options and events.)

    • This run is self-supported, and all participants are responsible for their own navigation, water, and snacks. Navigation notes, rest stops, and water locations will be included in runner confirmation emails.
    • Start: The Rivanna River Company is located behind the Pie Chest & Lone Light Coffee (1518 E High St). Parking is available along Riverdale Drive and in the Burnley-Moran Elementary school parking lot, across High Street from our meeting point (map below). • Finish: We'll end back at the RRC around noon, with plenty of time to rest up before the Rivanna Roots concert. The run is free, but admission to the concert is $12 in advance or $15 on-site -- but we will comp admission for the first 25 people who register for the full run! Local beer, wine, and food trucks will be on-site starting at 5:00, with the concert beginning at 6:00.

Join us for a group bike ride around the City on the Rivanna Trail! September 24 is National Public Lands day, and to celebrate the Rivanna Trail's 30th anniversary we have a full weekend of events planned. Let us show you how to navigate the trail's main loop! We have a limited number of free tickets to Saturday's Rivanna Roots concert available to Full Circuit participants - select the "Circuit Ride + Rivanna Roots" option if you wish to attend the concert afterwards.

(In addition to this bike circuit, co-sponsored by the Charlottesville Area Mountain Bike Club, we're also leading a full-loop hike, a family-friendly short walk, and a group run. We're also planning a bike ride of the River North segment of the trail on Sunday, September 25. Check the event overview for details of the other options.)

    • Distance: ~ 20 miles.
    • Cycling time: approximately 2-5 hours according to ability and speed. We will be splitting into groups according to ability and experience, and there will be van-assisted bail out points.
    • Start: The Rivanna River Company is located behind the Pie Chest & Lone Light Coffee (1518 E High St). Parking is available along Riverdale Drive and in the Burnley-Moran Elementary school parking lot, across High Street from our meeting point (map below). We leave from the RTF tent promptly at 1:00PM ("wheels down").
    • Finish: We'll end back at the Rivanna River Company around 5:00PM, in time for the Rivanna Roots concert. The ride is free, but admission to the concert is $12 in advance or $15 on-site -- but we will comp admission for the first 25 people who register! Local beer, wine, and food trucks will be on-site starting at 5:00, with the concert beginning at 6:00.
    • What to bring: a sturdy mountain bike, clothes and helmet appropriate for “urban wilderness” riding and the weather conditions, water and snacks, and any personal needs. There are a number of rock-hops and smaller streams to cross, so participants can expect wet toes.
    • There will be 3 or 4 aid stations with water and snacks (TBD). All riders should have a fat-tire geared bike, sturdy footwear, helmet, gloves, and water. Carrying a spare tube is recommended. Dress for the weather.
    • This is a strenuous ride - and is not suitable for first-time cyclists or children younger than 12, unless the are experienced riders. The RT is mostly a primitive trail, so "experience" means ability to ride on dirt trails with hills, roots, and rocks. That said, this is a perfect ride for an experienced beginner and all intermediates looking for a challenge. The bail-out option means no pressure to do the whole 21 miles, but everyone will be encouraged to finish as much as they can. This is a NO DROP ride - no one will be left behind.
    • By registering for this ride, you:

      • Acknowledge having read the above ride description.
    • We'll send a final confirmation to registrants the week before the ride.
