Rivanna Trails

Events

Trail maintenance work parties occur the second Saturday of each month from 9:00-12:00.

Our gathering point for work parties is at the RTF equipment shed at 2030 Morton Drive, near the Meadowcreek Gardens and behind Bodo's and the English Inn (see map). We usually meet at the tool shed at 8:45 and carpool to the work site, but contact the work party leader if you want to go directly to the project or plan on being late.

We have tools, but bring shears or clippers if you have them. Everyone is welcome! We are happy to have groups participate in our work parties, but please contact us ahead of time so that we can plan accordingly.

Join us for our 20th annual hike around the City on the Rivanna Trail! Registration opens for RTF members on September 15, and on October 1 for the general public.
    • Distance: ~ 20 miles.
    • Hiking time: approximately 8-9 hours. This is variable due to rest stops and hiking speeds. We are not out to set any time record, but will keep a steady pace.
    • We hike around the City in counterclockwise direction, using road walks and detours where necessary. There is a new bridge at Woolen Mills, but we still have some rock-hops and smaller streams to cross, so participants may want to bring a pair of water-safe shoes or sandals.
    • Start: Riverview Park is located at the eastern end of Chesapeake Street. We leave promptly at 6:30 AM.
    • What to bring: boots or sturdy shoes; clothes appropriate for “urban wilderness” hiking and for weather conditions; stream crossing shoes or sandals; water; snacks; personal needs.
    • Important note: This is a strenuous hike--not technically difficult, but it's a long day. Be sure you build up your endurance and break in your boots before hike day.
    • By registering for this hike, you:

      • Acknowledge having read the above hike description.
      • Acknowledge inherent risks, hazards, and dangers of this activity.
      • ŸAssume and accept any and all risks associated with participation.
      • ŸAttest that your physical and mental health are adequate for safe participation.
    • How to participate: No cost. Just register so we’ll know to expect you.
    • We'll send a final confirmation to registrants the week before the hike.
