2023 Bike the Loop - Full Circuit - Advanced/Fast

  • 23 Sep 2023
  • 2:30 PM - 5:00 PM
  • Rivanna River Company, behind 1518 E High St

  • Advanced/2.5-Hour Ride of the full 20-Mile RT loop

Join CAMBC for a group bike ride around the City on the Rivanna Trail! This is a fast-paced ride, approximately 2.5 to 3 hours, suitable for racers, experienced riders who like to push the pace, or riders who have ridden longer distances and who like to be challenged. If you are not a racer, do not prefer to ride as fast as possible, or have trouble keeping up with the front of the pack, then please check out the Intermediate/Brisk Pace group ride that leaves at 1:00 PM or the leisurely paced Novice/Slow ride that leaves at 11:00 AM.  All groups will have a ride leader and a sweeper to assure no one gets lost or left behind, and there will be stops at aid stations and van-assisted bail-out points.

  • Distance: ~ 20 miles
  • Cycling time: approximately 2.5-3 hours. We will be splitting into groups according to ability and speed, and there will be van-assisted bail out points.
  • Start: The Rivanna River Company is located at 1518 E High St (behind the new Hogwaller Brewing). Parking is available along Riverdale Drive and in the Burnley-Moran Elementary school parking lot, across High Street from our meeting point (map below). We leave from the CAMBC tent promptly at 2:30PM ("wheels down").
  • Finish: We'll end back at the Rivanna River Company around 5:00PM for the Mighty Joshua concert. The ride is free, and so is the concert! Local beer, wine, and food trucks will be on-site starting at 5:00, with the concert beginning at 6:00.
  • What to bring: a sturdy fat-tire mountain bike with gears - this ride is not recommended for hybrid or skinny-tire bikes - clothes and helmet appropriate for “urban wilderness” riding and the weather conditions, water and snacks, and any personal needs. There are a number of rock-hops and smaller streams to cross, so participants can expect wet toes.
  • There will be 3 or 4 aid stations along the way with water and snacks. All riders should have a fat-tire geared bike, sturdy footwear, helmet, gloves, and water. Carrying a spare tube is recommended. Dress for the weather.
  • This is a strenuous ride - and is not suitable for first-time cyclists or children younger than 12. If you are unsure about your ability, please consider the 6-hour ride that begins at 11:00 or the 4-hour ride that begins at 1:00. The RT is mostly a primitive trail, and this group is meant for advanced riders. The bail-out option means no pressure to do the whole 21 miles, but everyone will be encouraged to finish as much as they can. This is a NO DROP ride - no one will be left behind.
