2023 Bike the Loop - Full Circuit - Novice/Slow

  • 23 Sep 2023
  • 11:00 AM - 5:00 PM
  • Rivanna River Company, behind 1518 E High St

Registration

  • Novice/6-Hour Ride of the full 20-Mile RT loop

Join CAMBC for a group bike ride around the City on the Rivanna Trail! This is a slow-paced ride, approximately 6-7 hours, suitable for slower or less experienced riders, or riders who prefer a leisurely pace or who have never ridden the full 20 mile Rivanna Trail loop. If you prefer to ride faster, please check out the Intermediate/Brisk Pace or Advanced/Fast rides. All groups will have a ride leader and a sweeper to assure no one gets lost or left behind, and there will be stops at aid stations and van-assisted bail-out points.

  • Distance: ~ 20 miles.
  • Cycling time: approximately 6-7 hours according to ability and speed. We will be splitting into groups according to ability and experience, and there will be van-assisted bail out points.
  • Start: The Rivanna River Company is located at 1518 E High St (behind the new Hogwaller Brewing). Parking is available along Riverdale Drive and in the Burnley-Moran Elementary school parking lot, across High Street from our meeting point (map below). We leave from the CAMBC tent promptly at 11:00AM ("wheels down").
  • Finish: We'll end back at the Rivanna River Company around 5:00PM for the Mighty Joshua concert. The ride is free, and so is the concert! Local beer, wine, and food trucks will be on-site starting at 5:00, with the concert beginning at 6:00.
  • What to bring: a sturdy fat-tire mountain bike with gears - this ride is not recommended for hybrid or skinny-tire bikes - clothes and helmet appropriate for “urban wilderness” riding and the weather conditions, water and snacks, and any personal needs. There are a number of rock-hops and smaller streams to cross, so participants can expect wet toes.
  • There will be 3 or 4 aid stations along the way with water and snacks. All riders should have a fat-tire geared bike, sturdy footwear, helmet, gloves, and water. Carrying a spare tube is recommended. Dress for the weather.
  • This is a strenuous ride - and is not suitable for first-time cyclists or children younger than 12, unless the are experienced riders. The RT is mostly a primitive trail, so "experience" means ability to ride on dirt trails with hills, roots, and rocks. That said, this is a perfect ride for an experienced beginner looking for a challenge. The bail-out option means no pressure to do the whole 21 miles, but everyone will be encouraged to finish as much as they can. This is a NO DROP ride - no one will be left behind.
