Join us for our 20th annual hike around the City on the Rivanna Trail! September 25 is National Public Lands day, and in conjunction with the Rivanna River Company and Rivanna Roots concert series we're planning a series of events to celebrate the Rivanna Trail. In addition to a full loop hike, we're offering a family-friendly short walk, and cycling and running options. (
Check the
event overview
for details of the other options.
)
Distance: ~ 21 miles.
Hiking time: approximately 9 hours. This is variable due to rest stops and hiking speeds. We are not out to set any time record, but will keep a steady pace.
We hike around the City in counterclockwise direction, using road walks and detours where necessary. Our hike co-leader is Chris Gensic, Parks and Trail Planner for the City of Charlottesville.
Start:
Free Bridge is located at the corner of High Street and the 250 Bypass. Parking is available along Riverdale Drive and in the Burnley-Moran Elementary school parking lot, across High Street from our meeting point (map below).
We leave promptly at 8:00 AM.
Finish: We'll end at the Rivanna River Company about 5:00, in time for the Rivanna Roots concert, where w
e'll comp admission for the first 20 people who register! Local beer, wine, and food trucks will be on-site, starting at 5:00, with the concert beginning at 6:00.
What to bring: boots or sturdy shoes; clothes appropriate for “urban wilderness” hiking and for weather conditions; stream crossing shoes or sandals; water; snacks; personal needs.
There is a new bridge at Woolen Mills, but we still have some rock-hops and smaller streams to cross, so participants may want to bring a pair of water-safe shoes or sandals.
Important note: This is a strenuous hike--not technically difficult, but it's a long day. Be sure you build up your endurance and break in your boots before hike day.
By registering for this hike, you:
Acknowledge having read the above hike description.
Acknowledge inherent risks, hazards, and dangers of this activity.
Assume and accept any and all risks associated with participation.
Attest that your physical and mental health are adequate for safe participation.
How to participate: No cost. Just register so we’ll know to expect you.
We'll send a final confirmation to registrants the week before the hike.
