Belvedere Neighborhood Update

The Belvedere development is starting a new construction phase and needs Rivanna Trail users to stay on the new reroute (blue). We are hoping to work with the neighborhood in the future and build some amazing public trails, so help us maintain good relationships and avoid the old, closed section (red).
Three Notched Trail Grant

The Daily Progress reports that the Albemarle County Board of Supervisors has supported applying for a planning grant for $1.5 million to $3 million for the Three Notched Trail. The grant would pay for a feasibility study and initial design work.
Three Notched Trail Update

The Thomas Jefferson Foundation, who own and operate Monticello, recently acquired a riverfront property linking the historic parcels known as Lego and Shadwell. This critical acquisition allows the Foundation and Albemarle County to move forward with Greenway dedication that will allow for the extension of the County’s Old Mills Trail.

This Old Mills Trail will roughly travel the same route as the historic 3-Notch’d Trail on the north bank of the Rivanna River. The TNT passed through land that had comprised part of Thomas Jefferson’s original 5,000 acre plantation, including the Shadwell Mill. When constructed, this section of trail will essentially create the first leg of the Three Notched Trail in Albemarle County.

Please note that this proposed trail extension is not yet open. Some unauthorized trail work and tree clearing has already occurred, which cannot continue. We do not want to jeopardize this important new trail link with premature work, however well intentioned, and ask that nothing be done in this area without authorization from Monticello.

Loop the Ville & Rivanna Riverfest

September 25 is National Public Lands day, and to celebrate we are partnering with the Rivanna River Company and their Rivanna Roots concert series to offer a fun day on the Rivanna Trail. We’re also celebrating the new bridge at Woolen Mills and the implementation of our new signage project throughout the loop. If you've ever wondered where all the trail segments are located — or even just how to navigate from one segment to another — this is your opportunity to join a small group to experience the Rivanna Trail.

This year, we're offering opportunities to hike the full loop, bike the full loop, run a 5-mile segment, and for a family-friendly short walk along the paved section through Riverview Park. The day will conclude at the Rivanna River Company and the concert scheduled for that evening. There will be live music, with local beer, wine, and food trucks offering their wares. As an added incentive for completing one of our group events — beyond spending time on the RT — we will cover the concert admission for the first 20 participants who register for each option!
If you’re not up for a group event but want to join the festivities afterwards, regular admission to the concert is $10 per person (free for kids 12 and under), available through The Front Porch (https://frontporchcville.org/event/gallatin-canyon/#tribe-tickets).

The full loop hike begins at 8:00 AM at Free Bridge. Registration details here: Loop de Ville.

The full loop bike ride, in partnership with the Charlottesville Area Mountain Bike Club, begins at 1:00 PM, also at Free Bridge. Registration details here: Bike the Loop.

The no-drop run, in partnership with the Charlottesville Area Trail Runners, begins at 8:00 AM at Azalea Park. Registration details here: Run the RT.

The family-friendly walk begins at the Rivanna RIver Company at 4:00 PM. Registration details here: Family-Friendly Walk.

June is National Outdoors Month and June 5th is National Trails Day. In celebration of and in support of local trails and outdoor spaces, during the month of June a number of local breweries are giving their patrons menu options that contribute to local trail non-profits. A portion of the proceeds from select menu items will go to help maintain, operate, and expand the network of trails in the Charlottesville area.

Alert - River North Trail Reroute

Due to construction, the RTF's River North Trail has been rerouted through the Belvedere neighborhood. See the map below for the new trail alignment.

Directions: Coming from Pen Park or or the Dunlora neighborhood, the trail now veers to the left (orange connector trail) and onto Farrow Drive in the Belvedere neighborhood. Turn right on Farrow and soon left onto Fowler Street. After a block, make a right onto Belvedere Drive, a gravel road, until making a left and jumping back into the woods before the tree line. This section follows an old fire road until it reconnects with the original River North Trail beyond the construction zone. We are working on adding new signage and updating our maps.

Many thanks to the Dunlora and Belvedere community members who built this reroute, as well as the Belvedere developers for working with us to make this reroute possible. For your safety, as well as to help us maintain our community relationships, please stay on the designated RTF River North Trail system.
Men's Four Miler, October 31

The Charlottesville Track club is hosting the Men's Four Miler on October 31. The run/walk event will be held--with proper social distancing--on a new grass course at Foxfield that made its debut with the Women's Four Miler last month. It's a great opportunity to explore a new course and support cancer research at UVa. Details are at https://mens4miler.weebly.com.

RTF Remembers John Conover

The Rivanna Trail lost one of its earliest visionaries and long-time advocates with the passing of John Conover on Sunday, October 4. In 1992 he was one of the founding board members of the RTF, and he helped clear some of the first segments of the trail. Named a Charlottesville Bridge Builder in 2002, John also served as a member of the Charlottesville City Council, on the board of the Albemarle Charlottesville Historical Society, and with the Legal Aid Justice Center. We are grateful for his service to the Rivanna Trail.

Temporary Trailhead Closure

The trailhead at the end of Kenwood Lane, at the southeast corner of Greenbrier Park, is temporarily closed for construction. Storm water pipes are being installed, after which the City will add fencing and stone dust to improve the entry to the trail. The closest alternate entry to the trail and park from the south is at the end of Jamestown Drive.

Woolen Mills Bridge. . . Not Open

News of the opening of the bridge at Woolen Mills was premature -- there are some outstanding inspection and permitting issues that are being worked through with the County, and until those are complete the bridge is closed. We've reached out to the County for more information and a possible timeline, and will post here when we learn more.

Coyote Watch

We've had reports of sightings of a female coyote following walkers with dogs on the Willoughby Loop (between 5th Street and Jordan Park). It's believed there are pups in the woods. Small mammals of this sort aren't generally a risk, though they can become threatened by aggressive dogs and will protect their young. (As a reminder, dogs are required to be on leash on the entire Rivanna Trail.)

Woolen Mills Bridge Open

The new bridge at Woolen Mills is officially open, closing a major gap in the Rivanna Trail loop. As you head out to explore the new bridge, please be especially careful along the segment between Rt 20 and Woolen Mills. Our dedicated trail adopters and volunteers have been hard at work mowing and trimming, new trail blazes are coming soon, and we have more improvements planned once we are able to resume monthly work parties. However, portions are rocky and challenging (and we've also had reports of a downed tree after the recent storms), so watch your step.

East Coast Greenway, Maine to Florida

With trail use booming, there has never been a more critical moment for our nation to invest in regional trails and greenways. The East Coast Greenway Alliance is assembling a walking and biking route stretching 3,000 miles from Maine to Florida. The East Coast Greenway is designed to transform the 15 states and 450 communities it connects through active and healthy lifestyles, sustainable transportation, community engagement, climate resilience, tourism, and more. The Greenway offers a safe place for bicyclists, walkers, runners, and more — of all ages and abilities — to commute, exercise, and visit new destinations.

While the route doesn't pass through Charlottesville, it's an exciting development for Virginia trail users. Learn more at greenway.org.

Confronting Challenges & Working Together

Your friends at the Rivanna Trails Foundation hope that you are safe and well. As our community confronts the extraordinary challenge of COVID-19, we want you to know that our trails remain open.

But to keep area trails open and available for healthy outdoor recreation will require us to take precautions to protect everyone. We implore all trail users to practice physical distancing when out on the trail, in parking lots, and at trailheads. Please show kindness and consideration for others by stepping off the trail as needed to allow at least 6 feet for safe passage with other trail users.

Remember also that these difficult times have brought many new users out onto the trails. More experienced trail users should offer a welcoming smile and help navigating our trail system. We invite everyone to download and use our mobile app (available for Apple and Android).

Of course, none of what we do would be possible without you. Your physical and financial support sustains our all-volunteer organization. We have suspended regular monthly work parties until Governor Northam lifts the current stay-at-home order, but please join us when it's safe again to work together on trail maintenance and improvements. And, if your current financial situation permits, please become a contributing member.

We hope that you will keep hiking and biking to maintain your physical and mental health during these trying times. We look forward to seeing you (at a safe distance) out on the trail.

Vandalism on Observatory Hill

We need your help to address vandalism in the Observatory Hill area of the Rivanna Trail, along the segment between Ivy Road and Fontaine Avenue. We've had troubling reports from the U.Va. Environmental Sciences department that someone has been removing research flags in the woods that mark plots for student research.

These flags are essential for ongoing research projects involving many years of students’ efforts. The flags were first removed two weeks ago, after which students carefully re-identified plot boundaries with bright pink flags, only to have every single flag taken again last week.

First, please do not remove any flags you encounter while using the RT.

Second, if you see someone removing flags, please ask them courteously to stop.

Third, please report to us (rivannatrails@gmail.com) with any information you have about who may have removed flags in the past, or suspicious activity you may observe in the future.

Thank you very much for helping us be a good neighbor and to show respect for other trail users.

Trail Adopters Needed

We recently connected with our dedicated long-time adopters, the primary force for monitoring and maintaining the trail in such good shape. Unfortunately, several of them are no longer able to help with this important job. We would love for you to step up and take over. Expectations of adopters are minimal: check the trail about once a month, take care of problems that you can, and let us know about problems that are too big for you. We are always looking for ideas for projects as well, so if you have suggestions on making your section better, we want to know that too!

At this time, we need coverage 1) of Riverview Park, 2) from Holmes Avenue to Melbourne, 3) from Fifth Street to Jordan Park, 4) from Jordan Park to Avon, 5) from Fontaine Avenue to Stribling, 6) from Meadow Creek to Pen Park, and 7) from Pen Park to River Run. It is helpful to have double coverage of any section to lighten the load, so please reach out if you’re willing to help anywhere else.

These trails are imaginary without adopters doing the real work of scouting and maintenance. If you are interested or want to talk more about it, please be in touch. We also have details on the role on Trail Adopters page.

Erosion Remediation on Meadow Creek

Over the next few months, maintenance work will be conducted on the Meadow Creek stream restoration project to address areas of streambank erosion. Annual monitoring reports have detailed some areas of instability following the initial restoration efforts. Spot repairs have been conducted over the past several years, but have not been successful at fully addressing the erosion. A detailed design has been developed for a more comprehensive repair to fix these problem areas and ensure long-term success.

Work will begin the week of October 14, and will take several months to complete. The majority of the work will be conducted in the upstream portion of the project, from Michie Drive to Pepsi Place. Two isolated areas in Greenbrier Park will also be addressed. The work will begin near Michie Drive, and the contractors will work from upstream to downstream and expect to be completing the work in Greenbrier Park in January. Activities to be conducted include removing select in-stream structures that are not functioning properly, grading in certain areas to reduce the steep height of streambanks and ensure the channel remains stable, and placing new structures made of primarily woody material at key locations to reduce erosive energy. Disturbance of existing plantings will be minimized as much as possible, and additional plantings will be installed where needed following the restoration work.

No trail closures along the RT on the east side of the creek are anticipated to be needed at this time.

The new bridge over Meadow Creek between Locust Avenue and Lochlyn Hill was installed this week! There is still work to be done on the approaches, so be alert to continuing construction. This bridge will allow us to open a connection from the main RT loop to the trails through Pen Park and Dunlora. Also, the City will be developing an improved path along the north side of the creek, connecting to Holmes and running parallel to the rustic RT on the south side. The bridge is a proffer by the Lochlyn Hills development.

From the end of Locust Avenue/Meghan Court, the new bridge is at the bottom of the hill when you first reach the creek.

Willoughby Section now Open

Thanks to a partnership with the Willoughby Neighborhood, the Rivanna Trail loop now follows Moore's Creek between 5th Street Station and Jordan Park, eliminating a long road walk along 5th Street. Improved bridges have gone in, and the August work party gave the stretch a good mowing. We've started installing RT signage and blazes--updating our maps and the RTF app are still to come.

The segment has a number of connections to the neighborhood that are not public--please respect the residents' generosity in making this section available by staying on only the main path.

Construction Alert

Construction is scheduled to begin this week on a new bridge over Meadow Creek, from the Locust/Holmes segment of the RT to the development at Lochlyn Hill. The work should not impact the Rivanna Trail, but there may be brief closures as equipment moves in and out from Megan Court.

The new bridge will provide a direct connection between the Rivanna Trail loop and Pen Park, linking to the River North trails.

Trail Closure @ O-Hill, 5/28-5/31

A segment of the Rivanna Trail just south of Ivy Road will be closed May 28-31, between the hours of 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Signage and fencing will be installed, and flaggers will be monitoring the operations and use of the trail. Users of the trail will want to use the various spur trails on Observatory Hill to connect to nearby streets and bypass the work site.

Construction has commenced on a sewer line project to serve the new development planned for the site of the former Kluge Children's Rehabilitation Center. The project runs through the end of the year; while additional closures may be required, the project crew will minimize impacts to the RT and keep closures to a minimum.

Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan Needs Your Support

Robust bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure improves the quality of life for all residents. The recently-completed Jefferson Area Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan maps a comprehensive network of bike lanes, sidewalks, and shared use paths that connect Charlottesville and Albemarle neighborhoods to schools, shopping, downtown and natural areas. The Rivanna Trail is one piece of that network, the expansion of which is of vital importance to our community.

The Plan is an important milestone, but it is just a beginning. Now comes the hard work of getting projects in the plan built. The Piedmont Environmental Council worked with many partner organizations to craft a unified letter of community support requesting rapid implementation of the Plan's recommendations. The RTF endorses this plan, and encourages our friends and members to add their support as well.

You can learn more about the Plan and add your name to the letter at: https://www.pecva.org/our-region/albemarle-charlottesville/walk-bike/1449-sign-the-letter-support-a-more-connected-cville-albemarle.

Signing this letter will let elected leaders and funders know that we are serious about getting projects implemented.

Water Main Work near River Road

The Rivanna Water and Sewer Authority has let us know that they are working along the Rivanna River behind River Rd/River Ct, where a section of a water main has been exposed by erosion. They are in the process of stabilizing the bank and exposed pipe using various sizes of riprap (erosion and sedimentation control measures have been implemented to keep mud and debris from washing into the river). The work is just past where the RT turns west toward River Road, so shouldn't directly impact trail users, but please be aware of the ongoing project and alert to equipment, and do not enter any active construction zones.

Dunlora Deer Culling Update 2/Change of Hours

Bow hunting will continue in the area south of Dunlora until mid-March. However, since few deer have been taken lately (none this past week, total to date is 13) and hunters are no longer allowed to bait, beginning Friday, February 22, 2019, hunting will be extended from 5:00 A.M. to 9:00 A.M. to 3:00 A.M. to 9:00 A.M. The extension will permit the hunters to arrive earlier, settle in and catch the very early dawn light. Dunlora hopes this change will be of little, if any, disruption to residents and hikers and will improve results.

Construction at Old Ivy Rd

A construction project at UVa has closed access to the cut-off between Old Ivy Rd and the trailhead at the intersection of Ivy Road and the 250 Bypass. That short stretch has never been an official part of the Rivanna Trail--because of the illegal crossing of the railroad tracks--but those who might be inclined to use it will need to find an alternate route for the next couple of months.

Unfortunately, pedestrian access in the area is difficult. Traveling counter-clockwise, our recommended route is to turn past the Law School and do a roadwalk to Old Ivy--being particularly careful at the narrow railroad underpass. Some users may prefer to continue all the way to Leonard Sandridge Road or Old Ivy and then down to the underpass, though neither option has sidewalks. (Heading west at Old Ivy may be a shorter distance, but the intersections at Ivy Road and the bypass ramps are particularly treacherous, and are not recommended.) Consult the Rivanna Trail app or web map for detailed directions, both here and along the entire RT.

Longer term, as UVa development continues on Old Ivy Road and begins on the former Kluge Children’s Hospital site, we continue to advocate for a safe and convenient corridor for the RT and along Ivy Road. It’s impossible to know what solutions might be possible and when, but this area is increasingly recognized as a key missing link in the RT and the wider transportation network.

Temporary Closures in Dunlora

For users of the River North segments of the RT, please note that there will be some occasional closures on the east side of Dunlora during the winter. We have been notified by the Dunlora Community Association that they have approved bow hunting to reduce the size of the deer herds within the DCA property.

Hunting will be roughly confined to the area bounded by the Rivanna River, eastern property boundaries of homes on Barclay Hill and King William Drive, Dunlora Farm Road, and the boundary with Belvedere. Hunting may take place seven days a week and initially will be during dawn hours, 5:00 am - 8:00 am. (Depending on results, they may extend hunting hours to include the dusk hours, but we will be notified in advance if this change is made and will post a notice here.) Hunting will be conducted starting in November and conclude in the middle of March.

Download the Rivanna Trail app to navigate a detailed real-time map of the trail through your iPhone or Android device. The app covers the main Rivanna Trail loop, and offers:

a "you are here" icon to pinpoint your exact location on the trail

a zoomable interface to help navigate from one trailhead to another and along street walks

icons highlighting trailheads, road intersections, bridges, and stream crossings

your choice of a street or satellite background

If you've ever gotten lost on a road walk, or got to the end of one segment and wondered where the next begins, this is the perfect tool for on-the-ground navigation. In the future we plan to add the River North Spur through Dunlora and additional connecting trails within Charlottesville.

Download from the Apple App Store or Google Play, and let us know what you think.

New Trail between Fontaine and Stribling

February's work party opened up a new alignment for the trail south of Fontaine Avenue, eliminating a roadwalk along Natural Resources Drive. When heading counterclockwise, just before where the trail used to turn up to road (immediately past the site of the stile that was removed in January's work party), follow the new alignment to the right. The trail continues through the woods between the 250 Bypass and Natural Resources Drive, passes over a culvert, and comes out to the road directly across from where the trail resumes towards Stribling. New signs mark both trailheads directly opposite each other on both sides of the road.

We have some final grading yet to do, and also need to add trail blazes and update our maps, but the new alignment is open and ready for use.

RTF Remembers Matt Kayhoe

Matt Kayhoe, former RTF board member and professor at the UVa School of Architecture, passed away this past August. He is remembered as one of the beloved early builders of the Rivanna Trail. Matt regularly participated in work parties, added his architectural expertise to the design of both trails and bridges, and held everyone to high standards of work. In one memorable board meeting he spoke from the heart about the struggle he was having deciding whether or not to allow bicycles on the RTF trails. "I don't like the idea of having bikes on our trails, but when I was a child I had plenty of safe places to ride my bike. For children living in Charlottesville today, riding bikes on streets is not a safe alternative. We must open up our trails to bicycles for the sake of the children." Matt is remembered as a teacher with high, sometimes tough standards, but he was passionate, and he had a heart of gold. We are grateful for his work on the Rivanna Trail.

Temporary Closure at Stribling Avenue, 9/19-10/14

Due to construction of a utility duct, Stribling Avenue Extended will be closed from September 19 to October 14. A short stretch of the trail along Stribling where the trail comes out from the Forestry property and passes under the railroad trestle is impacted by this closure. As an alternative, through-hikers may walk along Fontaine, right on Jefferson Park Avenue, and then right again onto Old Lynchburg Road towards Azalea Park.

New Trail routing between Avon and Rt 20

Part of the trail between Avon Street and Quarry Park has closed. While the City pursues a permanent rerouting, a detour is now open that maintains the continuity of the trail. From the former trailhead at Avon Street, follow Avon south and up the hill to the next driveway on the left. Turn onto the driveway and follow the road straight back to a fence where you will find a sign marking a gate, which leads to the detour trail. There are signs with maps posted at either end of the closed section of trail.

Please respect the owners of the Virginia Self Storage property and discontinue all use of the previous trail. Doing so will help us maintain our positive relationship with the owners and will aid in future negotiations.

Thank you for your advocacy

I want to personally thank all of you who took the time to reach out to the City councilors and staff to tell them how valuable the RTF trail segment between Avon Street and QuarryPark is to you. Because of your efforts, the City held several meetings with RTF board members to hear our concerns about the loss of this vital section of trail and consider our uncertainties regarding the proposed alternatives.

We regret to inform you that, despite our best efforts, the City chose to forgo the agreement with VirginiaSelf Storage, LLC, which would have secured a permanent trail easement and greenway corridor between Avon Street and Quarry Park. Nonetheless, City Council and Staff are instead pursuing an alternative plan, which will potentially re-route the trail onto a narrow strip of land closer to Moore’s Creek, but on the same side of the creek as the current trail. We at the RTF are hopeful that this plan is successful. We will support the City’s efforts to secure the various permissions and easements required and offer volunteer labor to help establish the new trail corridor.

In the meantime, the City has generously opened a detour that will maintain the continuity of the trail. From the former trailhead at Avon Street, follow Avon Street south and up the hill until you come to the next driveway on your left. Turn left onto the driveway and follow the road straight back to a fence where you will find a sign marking a gate, which leads to the detour trail. There are signs with maps posted at either end of the closed section of trail.

Please respect the owners of the Virginia Self Storage property and discontinue all use of the previous trail. Doing so will help us maintain our positive relationship with the owners and will aid in future negotiations.

Thank you again for your ongoing support of our urban trail system.
Sincerely,
Dominion Resources Grant to Improve 250 Underpass

The RTF has been awarded a $10,500 grant from Dominion Resources to build an upgraded crossing under the 250 Bypass near Hydraulic Road. RTF was one of 61 environmental organizations across ten states that shared $1 million.

We have some concrete lintels through there now, but they’re subject to damage from high water, expensive to maintain--and back-breaking work to replace when needed (the photo at right is from our last repair project). The grant enables us to partner with the City to build a permanent raised walkway, high enough that it is above the normal water level, but low enough that heavy water and debris will be able to pass over it unobstructed during storms.

This is but the latest example of support from Dominion; in the past they’ve provided telephone poles for bridge projects, volunteer work crews, and an easement along their Hydraulic Road property.

New Trails!

The City of Charlotesville has finalized property purchase and easements along the west side of Moores Creek, which will allow for a new connection between Sunset Road and Old Lynchburg Road. This provides a permanent trail to Azalea Park, replacing the former RT route on the opposite side of the creek that was closed a couple of years ago. Some temporary markers are already in place, but improvements and signage will come later in the year. This new property, coupled with an easement from the Eagles Landing apartments, will close a major gap in the Trail though southwest Charlottesville.

Board Members Sought

Twenty-four years ago, a group of Charlottesville residents had a vision. They shared a deep appreciation of nature, the desire to explore the hidden wild places within our urban landscape, and an idea for a trail that followed our local waterways and encircled our city. The current board members of RTF are proud to carry on the vision of those founding members as the trail and the organization continue to grow.

Whether you are a trail user, a property owner, a one-time volunteer, or a trail adopter, you know the value that RTF brings to our community. We are currently looking for people like you who may be interested in serving on the RTF Board of Directors. Board members meet once monthly, lead or co-lead at least one trail workday per year, serve as advocates for trail use and development, and guide the evolving vision of the organization. Previous non-profit board experience is a plus, but enthusiasm for our local trails is the primary qualification.

Some of us are naturalists who use the trails to immerse ourselves in the beauty of our native flora and fauna, others are active hikers, runners, and cyclists; and many are all of the above. Whatever draws you outdoors and into our urban wild places, we all rely on the trails that connect our community. Please contact us if you or someone you know are interested in becoming more involved, and thank you for your support of our local trails!

RTF Remembers Francis Fife

Francis Fife, a true public servant, died this morning. He was 95. Funeral arrangements are pending.

Francis was a remarkable man with a remarkable record of service to the community, including eight years on City Council and a term as Mayor from 1972 to 1974. He was a founder of the Charlottesville Housing Foundation and served on the Board of Piedmont Housing Alliance from PHA’s inception until his resignation this past year for health reasons. He was also a founder and President of the Rivanna Trails Foundation, and he served on the Board of Advocates for a Sustainable Albemarle Population. He was mayor at the time of the vote to approve the Downtown Mall, though because he was a Vice President of what was then Virginia National Bank (now part of Bank of America), which had an office on the Downtown Mall, he recused himself. He was proud of an unpopular vote for scattered-site public housing. He was also proud to support the Ivy Creek Foundation, around the time that he was mayor.

He was a gentle, humble man who will be greatly missed.

Brief Closure in Riverview Park - February 25

Rescheduled due to weather If you plan to be in Riverview Park on Wednesday, February 25, be on the alert for blasting at the existing Rivanna Pump Station located at the entrance to park (intersection of Chesapeake St. and Riverside Ave). A single blast is anticipated mid-day. Crews will be working on the 16th to drill holes in preparation for the blast.

Vehicular and pedestrian traffic will be temporarily stopped on the adjacent roads, trails, and at the park entrance in the vicinity around the pump station at the 5-minute warning horn/siren before the blast. There will be another horn/siren sounded right before the blast, and then a prolonged horn/siren following the blast when the blaster has confirmed the site is all clear and then normal traffic patterns will resume. Please note that the park will not be closed.

Several seismographs will be set up in the Woolen Mills neighborhood to gather vibration data. We appreciate your cooperation to adhere to all signage and personnel regarding blasting for your SAFETY!

Dueling Work Parties

In addition to our own monthly work party, our friends at the Charlottesville Area Mountain Bike Club are hosting a work party at Ragged Mountain. RTF has worked with the city over the past couple of years to restore and build trails around the new dam and expanded reservoir, and CAMBC is continuing that effort. RTF. . . CAMBC. . . one day, two great work parties. Take your pick and show your love for local trails on Valentine's day! Click here for details on the RTF Monthly Work Party; details on CAMBC's event are below.

What: First ever CAMBC/City of Cville workday at Ragged Mountain. Help punch in a critical section of trail that gets us closer to having the first loop around the reservoir. How good is that? At 9, we'll have a very short briefing on safety, project overview, and logistics.

When: Saturday, February 14, 9am- Noon, with a grill-out after

Where: Ragged Mountain dam parking lot. Note that this is not the old lower parking lot, but the upper, new one. If you aren't sure, keep going uphill past Camp Holiday Trails until the road ends at the dam. We need to haul people to the work site, which is about a mile away. If you have a 4WD vehicle, please bring it to help haul people from the parking lot.

Notable extra: For those who can stick around, CAMBC will be supplying a simple grill-out after we are done, at the parking area. Nice! Bring a plate so we don't generate a bunch of trash.

What to bring: If you have any trail tools (especially digging tools like rogue hoes, pulaski's, digging hoe, etc.) bring them. We don't know how many folks are planning to attend, so bring whatcha got. Wear hiking boots and prepare for cold. Bring work gloves.

The original trail was closed during construction of the Parkway, and had become totally overgrown and impassible over the past few years.

The reopened spur starts along the fence at the west side of the CHS football field on Melbourne Road, and runs north about a quarter mile. The trail ends at the old-growth kudzu patch, but future work parties will clear through to Meadow Creek at the culvert, making a mini loop with the RT on the east side of the Parkway. Even in its incomplete state, it's an addition to the Rivanna Trail worth exploring.

Interactive Map to Support RTF

The City of Charlottesville is currently revising its 2003 Bike & Pedestrian Master Plan under the leadership of Amanda Poncy, the city's biking and pedestrian coordinator. As many of you know, the RTF participated mightily in drafting the 2003 Plan, and we are grateful that the city has done so much over the years to support the Rivanna and other trails.

As part of this current project, the city has posted an online interactive map through which people can indicate desired routes or destinations, including ones in the county. One must register and log in, but does not have to be a city resident to do so.

Participating in this mapping activity is a great way to expand and help protect our trail system. Thanks for all the ways you help the RTF.
RTF celebrates support from Virginia National Bank

The RTF celebrates Virginia National Bank's "e-statement campaign," the proceeds of which will help us build a new pedestrian bridge. If you would like to volunteer engineering expertise, construction skills, or heavy equipment donations to this project, please contact us.

Here are details from our most recent letter to RTF members: "As our city evolves and grows, so does the importance of a trail system that serves a diverse group of city residents. Thanks to a close partnership with the Charlottesville Parks and Recreation Department, the Greenbrier Neighborhood Association, and Virginia National Bank we are on the verge of building the first in a series of bridges over the newly restored Meadow Creek. This is the first step within a larger plan to create a new multi-use trail through the entire Meadow Creek Valley, connecting the paths along the John Warner Parkway to Highway 29 North. By building multi-use trails like these, which co-exist with our rustic footpaths, we can preserve the classic RTF trail experience while expanding the accessibility and commuter value of our trail system."

Western Bypass Update

The RTF Board would like to thank its faithful and generous supporters who have recently sent in financial gifts, its incredible trail adopters and work party volunteers who have braved recent rains and snows to maintain the trail, and visionaries who have presented us with plans for new or improved trails.

The Board would also like to give you an update on the Route 29 Western Bypass and its potential impacts to the Rivanna Trail. Depending upon final design, the Bypass’s southern interchange could negatively impact or destroy up to a mile of the Rivanna Trail between Barracks Road and Old Ivy Road.

In September of 2012, we informed you of an information meeting that gave the public an opportunity to provide comments to VDOT about the Bypass’s southern interchange. At that time, the RTF Board expressed its concerns and requested that all future maps of the roadway include the Rivanna Trail. VDOT obliged, surveyed the trail, and included it on future maps.

In 2013, the Federal Highway Administration designated the Rivanna Trail in the area of the southern interchange to be a “section 4(f) resource.” In layman’s terms, this means that the FHWA deemed the Rivanna Trail to be an “important public recreational resource,” requiring VDOT to include a mitigation plan for protecting or improving the trail. VDOT has offered a rough draft of a mitigation plan, but the Board is awaiting more details before making any decisions.

On February 5, the RTF Board presented a letter to the Albemarle County Board of Supervisors supporting the BOS’s agenda item of deciding whether or not to hold a public hearing about the Bypass. The BOS voted 5-1 to hold a hearing.

What can you do to help protect the Rivanna Trail from impacts of the Route 29 Western Bypass?

You may address your concerns about potential negative impacts to the Rivanna Trail at a public hearing about the Bypass sponsored by the Albemarle County Board of Supervisors on February 19.

You may write a letter about your concerns to the Albemarle County Board of Supervisors, to Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe, or to Virginia Secretary of Transportation Aubrey Layne.

Again, we thank you for the many ways you support both the RTF and the RT.
Follow the Trail!

Today's rain didn't discourage the the monthly work party from digging post holes and installing a pair of barricades across a segment of the access roadway that runs between 5th Street and Jordan Park, where we're trying to encourage users to stay on the trail. As tempting as the roadway might look, it cuts across some private property and is meant solely for official access to the sewer right-of-way. This segment has been the focus of a couple recent work parties, so the official trail is in good shape and easy to follow.

There - as along the entire trail - we need to be respectful of the generous landowners who have granted access to the RT by keeping to the official trail route.

Rock hop between Stribling and Sunset Ext'd reconstructed.

"Fun" is the best word to describe watching nine enthusiastic Phi Gamma Deltas attack the challenge of rebuilding our rock hop in Moore's Creek today. Having communicated well with us before they came, they knew exactly what they were facing: frigid creek water up to their knees, an end goal without a prescribed execution plan, and dozens of large rocks to move. The men assessed the situation, made a plan, began implementation, and inspired each other with cooperation, competition, cajoling, puns, quotations from literature and movies, and a little splashing. During construction they were visited by four dogs, four runners, an extended family with two little stick-yielding boys ["When we grow up, can we play in the cold stream, too?"], and three men on mountain bikes. The Rivanna Trail is a well-used treasure, the RTF could not keep it open without the help of volunteers, and everyone appreciates the work of these young men from UVa.
From Jordan Park, follow the Rivanna Trail DOWNstream, go UNDER the Avon Street bridge, and follow the new side-cut (benched) trail up to street level. If you want to continue on the trail toward Quarry Park, turn left at the street and walk south along Avon Street, cross the bridge, and turn left into the pine trees to pick up the rustic trail again.

We love our volunteers and supporters !

Sept. 14th 2nd Sat. Work Party Report - On a beautiful morning for trail work, and being outside generally, the Rivanna Trails Foundation was honored to have more than 30 volunteers dedicate their morning (and some early afternoon) to improving trail conditions. Our primary effort was going to be between the RTF shed (on Morton Drive) and Brandywine Rd, but with so many volunteers, we actually had a group working between Barracks and Leonard Sandridge as well. Many thanks to David Stackhouse of the Charlottesville Area Mountain Bike Club (CAMBC) for leading this group in trimming back the summer growth and improving some of the rocky sections. The group that worked closer to the shed was focused on digging trenches to encourage better drainage and less mud, and trail users will see evidence of this in numerous spots along the trail.

The RTF would like to thank all the volunteers for coming out this morning, including the University of Virginia's Phi Sigma Pi, Mens and Womens club cross country teams, and Project Serve.

In addition to the above fantastic turnout of volunteers, Kristen Rabourdin of Whole Foods organized a Kids Stewardship Day on the Trail [with free apples before and healthy make-your-own lunches after!]. From the store, we led nine hard little workers and their parents under the Hydraulic Road underpass to overgrown trail where they clipped and tossed and totally cleared thick vegetation all the way to the 250 Bypass. Thank you, Whole Foods for being a great trail neighbor and supporter!

In 1999 more than 100 volunteers helped the RTF build trail and three "organic"-style bridges here on National Trails Day. Now this section of trail is heavily used by members of the entire Charlottesville-Albemarle community, and numerous volunteers have continued to donate their time keeping it open and accessible, including most recently Eagle Scout Ben Beiter.
Volunteers keep the Rivanna Trail open!

The Poor House and nearby trail on UVa grounds received a sprucing up during Earth Week thanks to Carey Hill’s efforts to coordinate volunteers from the UVa Sustainability Outreach Committee and the Charlottesville Area Mountain Biking Community (CAMBC). Thanks, Carey!

highlight the efforts of May’s Second Saturday Work Party volunteers. Under the leadership of Michael Barnes, volunteers mowed, lopped, pulled, sawed, dug, and removed trash from this lovely stretch of trail between the Christian Aid fields and the RT’s intersection with 5th Street near Harris Street. Check out more pictures on our photo pages.

Future opportunities to volunteer:

June 1, City Parks & Rec. is celebrating National Trails Day by clearing trail in the Ragged Mountain Natural Area. Watch local media for details.

June 8, RTF Second Saturday work party.

Anytime – Carry clippers w/ you when you hike and clip back those aggressive vines and branches. RTF’s goal is to keep trail corridors open to approximately
6’ wide X 7’ high.

Route 29 Bypass’s impact on the Rivanna Trail

As the RTF board reported to membership earlier, the southern interchange of the proposed Route 29 Bypass, if built, will impact the Rivanna Trail between Barracks Road and Old Ivy Road, possibly displacing this segment of the trail permanently.

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is holding a public information meeting to present three design alternatives of the southern interchange.

Thursday May 23, 2013

5 – 7:30 PM

Holiday Inn Charlottesville, 1901 Emmet Street

Written and Oral comments will be due by June 3, 2013

The RTF board has not seen these current design alternatives. We encourage all members and trail users to view them at the public meeting, ask to see them online if unable to attend the meeting, and provide feedback to VDOT as appropriate.

New Eagle Scout

Congratulations to Andrew Heatwole, who achieved the status of Eagle Scout on April 28. Andrew's service project was to design and build a new bridge for the Rivanna Trail, which was installed last fall on the Observatory Hill section. The Trail has been the beneficiary of a number of Eagle Scout projects over the years, and we congratulate Andrew on his achievement and thank him for his service to the RTF.
Improved Trail Below Locust Avenue

The March work party installed some new signposts at the Holmes Avenue trailheads, and moved a stretch of the trail between there and Locust Avenue onto higher ground. Part of this stretch has long been subject to flooding, so we shifted a bit of the trail out of standing water to what we hope is drier ground. The muck quotient is still high because of the melting snow, but the hope is that this part of the trail will now drain and dry out quicker. Please help establish the new path the next time you're in the area!

Thank you, warm footed volunteers!

In architecture, a lintel is a “horizontal structural element” used for various purposes. To the RTF, lintels are a convenient way to get hikers through shallow water. Unfortunately over time they crack and disintegrate. Luckily for us hikers, February work party leader Nick Hamblett and his merry band of volunteers were not deterred by cold water.

Nick reports, “Despite definitely cold temperatures, about a dozen hardy volunteers showed up for the February work party, on the second Saturday. Starting from the RTF shed off Morton Drive, we worked our way clockwise on the trail. Work split into two groups. The first was a truly adventurous group who worked to replace the broken lintels (cement beams) in the creek passing under 250. Their efforts in the cold water that morning are much appreciated, as the passing can now be made with much more confidence, as none of the blocks are missing chunks. The second group got to remain dry the whole time, and cleaned up the trail from the culvert under Hydraulic up to about the first clearing made by the recent stream restoration project. We hacked back some thorns, and re-defined the trail along the restoration project, closing up the temporary trails that were in place for the duration of this project. Ramps to small footbridges were improved, as were drainage channels in some of the muddy spots. Thanks to all of the volunteers, whose efforts continue to improve the trail, a gem of Charlottesville.”

Quarry Park Bridge Closed

The bridge connecting Quarry Park to the Rivanna Trail is closed while a replacement is installed. The original bridge was in declining health, and the RTF partnered with the City to purchase and relocate the pedestrian bridge that was used during the Jefferson Park Avenue bridge replacement. Access to this segment of the trail is available from the Route 20 and Avon Street ends. The new bridge should be open later this spring.
January 2013 Work Party

Approximately a dozen enthusiastic volunteers gathered at the RTF shed on January 12th under foggy and cooler than expected temperatures to attack two sections of the Rivanna trail that were experiencing some erosion along Moore's Creek. The first section that we tackled was the section from Azalea Park to 5th Street. After crossing the creek we sidecut into the back re-routes of the trail in about 4-5 sections as well as clearing debris from a downed tree that was blocking the trail. We finished that section around 11:00 and then made our way to Jordan Park to do the same on the section of the trail from Jordan Park to Avon Street. Thanks go out to all who vounteered to making this a very successful work Day.

Andrew Heatwole (front) led a project that replaced a decaying and undersized bridge on Observatory Hill, one of the most-used segments of the Trail. As part of his Eagle Scout qualifications, Andrew designed the bridge, raised the funds to purchase materials, and organized a work party of friends and fellow Scouts. The new bridge went in on October 14. Thanks to Andrew for the improved bridge and for supporting the Rivanna Trail!
The Rivanna Trail and the Route 29 Charlottesville Bypass

Preliminary design of the “southern terminus” of the Route 29 Charlottesville Bypass with the Rivanna Trail inserted.

Bypass is light yellow. Rivanna Trail is green.

Dear Friends of the Rivanna Trail,

The RTF is grateful to generous landowners who have given permission to the public to walk on trails on their land, and we include in this list the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT). In our capacity as stewards of the land our trails traverse, the RTF has historically not made public statements about land use issues, but we wish to inform our members of the impact VDOT’s proposed Route 29 Charlottesville Bypass will have on the Rivanna Trail.

Specifically the “southern terminus” of the proposed Bypass will lie near, along, or on the path of the Rivanna Trail behind UVa’s JAG, Law, and Business schools, from near Barracks Road to Ivy Road. As currently designed, the southern terminus has the potential to close off access to trail users permanently.

We invite you to read the following information:

VDOT’s website about the Bypass -

http://www.virginiadot.org/projects/culpeper/rt._29_bypass.asp

On the above website, scroll down to

Southern Terminus Concept Drawing, Sept. 26, 2011 (6 MB) to see the preliminary design of the “southern terminus” in the vicinity affecting the Rivanna Trail.

On the above website, scroll down to “Skanska-Branch/JMT Technical Proposal, June 20, 2012” to see other preliminary designs of the Bypass.

Proposal Submittal - Volume 1 and 2 (28 MB)

On the above VDOT website, find the environmental assessment under

New Environmental assessment Aug. 23, 2012 (4 MB).

What you can do:

Attend VDOT’s public information meeting about designs for the Bypass. Thursday, September 27th from 6 - 9 p.m. at Jack Jouett Middle School.

Encourage VDOT to include the Rivanna Trail in their designs of the Bypass, to accommodate hikers and bikers in the region of the Bypass, and to protect trails.

Information about alternatives to the Bypass:

The Southern Environmental Law Center (SELC) has created a plan entitled “LetsGo 29” that brings together ideas that could be implemented in the Route 29 corridor, projects that done together would cost less money than VDOT’s Bypass and that would not impact the Rivanna Trail.

SELC’s information:

http://www.southernenvironment.org/cases/charlottesville_bypass/

SELC’s LetsGo 29 video:

http://www.southernenvironment.org/lets_go_29

A bit of historical background:

SELC’s “LetsGo 29” plan references “Places 29 Master Plan.” This latter document encompasses the Route 29 corridor and includes multiple spot transportation improvements. The Places 29 Master Plan, created with public participation, was adopted by both the Albemarle County planning commission and the Board of Supervisors.

Information and documents:

http://www.albemarle.org/department.asp?department=cdd&relpage=3735

Avon Street to Rt 20 cleared

July's work party tackled the trail segment between Avon Street and Route 20, including the spur into Quarry Park. The Avon Street end in particular is one of the toughest sections in which to keep vegetation at bay, especially in the fast-growing Virginia summer. Thanks to the hard work of our hardy volunteer crew, it's now fully clipped, weed-whacked, chain-sawed, and raked. Now is the perfect time to get out and explore one of the prettiest sections of the trail.

Rivanna Trail and RTF Featured in C-VILLE Weekly Article

Local freelance author and trail enthusiast Jayson Whitehead has a terrific article in the current issue of the C-VILLE Weekly that features our beloved Rivanna Trail. Check out the article at this link.

From beer bottles to an arboretum

Several years ago the Charlottesville Area Tree Stewards (CATS) adopted the Barracks Road trailhead, an area that had for years been an attractant for beer bottles and fast food paper wastes. Thanks to their clear vision, careful planning, and dedicated work, the wonderful CATS folks have transformed this area into an amazing small arboretum of native trees, shrubs, and wildflowers. With a stream nearby and an additional rustic path, the small area is truly a gift to the community. The RTF thanks UVa for allowing the public to hike on this land and the CATS folks for their efforts.

If you would like to adopt your favorite area along the trail, no matter how small -- even a single pesty multiflora rose bush as our dear friend Rosemary Ballister did for years -- just drop us an email note at rivannatrails@gmail.com and we'll advise.
RTF supports Boys & Girls Club trail building event

On April 21, 2012, the RTF lent tools and management expertise that empowered 23 young people from the Boys & Girls Club to build a brand new hiking trail in the Southwood community. An equal number of adult volunteers from Comcast and UVa mentored the young people, and together they cleared and side-cut a new trail, dug long-buried trash out of the forest, discovered new wildlife, and learned about teamwork. The new trail adds to a network of trails the young people had already built for their community and will eventually connect to Biscuit Run State Park. Look for our RTF tools in this NBC29 news coverage.

Loyal RTF members, young people from CHS and UVa, and really young folks out for their first taste of trail stewardship worked together to accomplish a big job. It never fails to amaze workers how "many hands can accomplish great things." The RTF encourages community members to visit or revisit what is one of the oldest and prettiest trail segments. Access is from the bike-ped trail; look for our new green trailhead signs.

Trail Adopters Build Bridges in Belvedere

Leigh and Jim Surdukowski, who have adopted the Belvedere section of the River North trails, recently completed two bridges and a short re-route to avoid a couple hazardous stream crossings. RTF purchased the necessary materials, while Leigh and Jim donated their time and labor.

Trail adopters like the Surdukowskis are the eyes and ears of the Rivanna Trail, and invaluable in keeping the Trails open. Everyone who enjoys the trails can play a part, and RTF invites other trail users to let us know where bridges or other improvements might be needed - and if you'd like to volunteer your time and labor, contact the RTF to see if we may be able to help or provide acknowledgement for donated materials.

The RT and the Western Bypass

Ever wonder how the proposed Western Bypass will impact the Rivanna Trail? The answer is, probably more than you expect. Plans call for the bypass to turn north from the 250 Bypass at the intersection with Leonard Sandridge Road, and as the image below shows, the ramps and overpasses will impact one of the most-used sections of the Trail. RTF is following developments, and hope that community support will help preserve a trail routing through the area.
The Rivanna Trail in Use

The March 11 edition of the Daily Progress has an article about an after-school tutoring program for Greenbrier Elementary students who have been relocated to Charlottesville with their families by the International Rescue Committee. Led by Thomas Connaughton, a Greeenbrier teacher and avid trail runner, the students have also formed the Greenbrier Trail Running Club and regularly run along the Trail from the school to the program site at Hearthwood Townhouse Apartments off Michie Road.
O-Hill Trails Upgraded

Observatory Hill is one of the most popular segments of the Rivanna Trail, and that use resulted in some particularly eroded and muddy sections immediately south of Ivy Road. On March 10, supplemented by some three dozen volunteers from the Charlottesville Area Mountain Bike Club, the monthly work party completed significant improvements. Muddy patches were re-graded, drainage channels dug, trash removed, and a couple sections re-routed to higher - and drier - ground. CAMBC members regularly provide their time and labor in support of the Rivanna Trail, and RTF could not have completed such a large project in one morning without their help. Be sure to check out the improvements! (Some photographs here.)
Loop Speed Record - and Challenge

On February 4, local runner Neal Gorman established what is believed to be the fastest known time to run the entire Rivanna Trail Loop, 2:09:47. He commemorated the establishment of that record with a donation to the RTF of $209.47. Details of his record-setting run are at www.nealgorman.com.

He's also issued a challenge to local runners to beat his time - and pledged a second donation to RTF corresponding to that new record (plus pizza and beer for the victor). If you're up for the challenge, this is your opportunity to earn some personal glory and support the RTF.

Enjoying the Outdoors with Children

The Rivanna Trail is a valuable community resource, providing a safe and fun place for spending time outside with children.

At the annual Teddy Bear Hike three dozen adorable, warmly dressed kids along with furry animals and adult caretakers explored the Rivanna Trail in Riverview Park. They fueled up on “people food,” sprinkled “animal food” for birds, and warmed up with hot chocolate provided by our friends at Blue Ridge Mountain Sports.

During a recent 8-week long Forest Discoveries program at the Boys & Girls Club located at Southwood, children aged 6 to 10 improved access to their forest by building a new hiking trail.

The amazing APO fraternity from UVa then ignored sleet, rain, and mud to finish up the heavy work. See our photo album for some pictures of the day.

Do you have a group of kids who want to help out on the trail? Do you want to make a gift that supplies kid-sized tools or user-friendly signage? Send us an email.

Volunteers make the RTF and the Rivanna Trail a reality. RTF member John Imbrie responded to our request for trail signage improvement ideas with a wonderfully detailed note full of suggestions.

Kwang Koh (pictured at right) and his wife recently moved to Charlottesville. They read about the Rivanna Trail online, and purposely selected a house near it. Kwang has already adopted a section of trail, trimmed fallen limbs, replaced a broken board on a footbridge, and constructed a lovely seat overlooking the river. Thank you!

Many feet and eyes enable us to achieve our goal of making the trail route crystal clear to anyone who walks along it. What’s your favorite section? Where do we need to add signs or make improvements? We ask all trail users to participate in this project by noting places along the trails that need clarification or improvement. Send us an email at rivannatrails@gmail.org, being as specific as possible as to location of your observations.
Parkway Trail Open - Finally

The County's segment of the newly-renamed John Warner (nee Meadowcreek) Parkway opened on January 6, and with it the multi-use trail between Melbourne and Rio Road. The 10-foot-wide paved path runs the entire length of the Parkway, and is fully accessible and suitable for pedestrians and bicyclists.

The RTF has begun to reopen the original trail alignment, with the segment from just north of Melbourne to the railroad culvert having been the subject of a recent work party. The southernmost leg of the segment, just north of the Park Street bridge, is still closed, necessitating a short road walk along Melbourne and then a few hundred feet down the parkway trail. The culvert beneath the railroad tracks also remains closed, but we are hopeful of obtaining permission to build a new walkway.
Meadow Creek Restoration Project

Meadow Creek, one of the City's major waterways, has been selected to undergo a major stream restoration in 2012. The restoration will result in improved water quality, as well as enhanced aquatic habitat and aesthetic values, along the stream between the Norfolk Southern railway at the east end of Greenbrier Park, and Hydraulic Road.

To prepare for this project, the segment of the Rivanna Trail just north of Hydraulic Road has been shifted to the east. We anticipate this will allow the trail will remain open during the project, but be alert for equipment and temporary closures.

New Trail Alignment between Stribling and Sunset

A strong turnout for the November 12, 2011, trail work party - bolstered by volunteers from Madison House, Alpha Phi Omega service fraternity, and local cub scouts - blazed an entirely new segment of the Rivanna Trail loop, connecting Stribling Avenue and Sunset Avenue. This connection replaces what had been one of the longest road walks on the Trail, and is possible thanks to an easement from Stribling Holding LLC.

When walking the loop trail counter-clockwise, turn right on Stribling Avenue after passing through the bamboo patch below the Forestry Department, then right again immediately after crossing under the railroad bridge. Pass through the field, cross the driveway, and then descend to the rock hop across Moore's Creek. The trail continues along an old farm road, and then turns left along Sunset Avenue Extended before meeting up with the Sunset/Azalea segment at the pedestrian bridge.

We have some photographs posted here.
Village School Builds Bridge

With apologies for the delay in getting photographs posted to the web site, here are some shots of a new bridge on the trail, this one built by the Class of 2011 at the Village School. Inviting all to do a little monkey bar workout, the bridge was constructed in late spring.

Located on the trail segment that runs between Barracks Road and Leonard Sandridge Drive, the new span connects the main trail with a spur that runs behind the Law School. Many thanks to the Village School!
Day of Caring Crew Relocates Greenbrier/Hydraulic Segment

Thanks to a contingent of over 30 UVa employees who donated their time and effort as part of the annual United Way Day of Caring, a quarter-mile section of the trail just north of Hydraulic Road has been moved eastward to make way for the Meadow Creek restoration project that is scheduled to begin in December. Led by Chris Gensic, the Parks and Trails Planner for the City of Charlottesville, the volunteers spent the morning cutting trees, relocating bridges, clearing brush, and even avoiding a nest or two of wasps. The October 8 RTF work party finished the job, and the new route is now complete. Check our photo album for photos of the new trail.

Help inaugurate the new segment (and pack the soil) by coming out for a hike!
New Bridges in Dunlora

The River North segment of the Rivanna Trail has two new bridges, thanks to the effort of Ben Cosgro. As an Eagle Project for Boy Scout Troop 241, Ben built two bridges behind the soccer fields in Dunlora, one 23' long and the other 30'. Work on the bridges was finished this past May.

A gift from the RTF helped pay for supplies and material, with the time and labor provided by Ben. The new bridges are a great example of how volunteers and member contributions make the Rivanna Trails ever better. Thank you, Ben!
New Web Site Debuts

If you can read this post, it's because the new RTF web site is now live! We hope the new look makes it easier to find information on exploring the Rivanna Trail and supporting the RTF. Behind the scenes, we also have a new database that will help us better manage membership records and track donations. We think we've got all the new pages linked and functioning correctly, but please drop me a line at rivannatrails@gmail.com if something is missing or not working properly.
Pantops Trails Envisioned

The Pantops Community Advisory Council (PCAC) is a group of of citizens appointed by the County Board of Supervisors to serve as a sounding board for issues impacting Pantops Master Planning. In a recent posting, they mentioned plans for the trail that runs along the county side of the Rivanna River near Free Bridge:

"Albemarle County is working to connect this portion of the trail with land which has been proffered by both State Farm and Martha Jefferson. The hope is this will eventually be turned into the “Old Mills Trail.” County staff is pursing various grants and non-traditional funding streams to work towards this final goal. Additionally, the County is looking to develop this trail further upstream, with the long range goal of having the trail reach the Lewis & Clark Exploratory Center, and potentially even continuing substantially further north. The PCAC hopes to work with the County to help in this endeavor. There are a number of groups the PCAC would like to bring together to facilitate the success of this project. The hope is that a grassroots effort can help the realization of this trail as well as its continued maintenance. Interested citizens are encouraged to attend PCAC meetings to voice their interest, and to follow the PCAC website for developments on this and other “green” projects."

RTF Launches Three Notched Trail Project

RTF is launching a major new initiative to expand our trail network West from Charlottesville along the route of the old Three Notched Road. Our goal is to create a scenic and safe walking and biking route from the Rivanna River near Monticello to the Blue Ridge Mountains following the path of the historic Three Notched Road. Originally conceived by a small group of community members, this project has become the second major RTF initiative to expand our trail network outside of the existing loop trail.

Our work on the Three Notched Trail (TNT) is at a very early stage. We have begun planning a route. We hope that the first phase of the trail will begin in the vicinity of University Hall, skirt the athletic stadium to reach Old Ivy Rd., follow the railroad tracks and Ivy Road west from Bellair Market, cross the Health Sciences Northridge property, join a stretch of the original Three Notched Road behind the Christian Aid Mission, then follow either Rt. 250 West or Old Ballard Rd west from Broomley Road, and eventually reach West Leigh Drive.

To find out more information about this exciting project, download our brochure (pdf).

New Trails at Belvedere

There are some great new trails north of the Belvedere neighborhood.

Directions: From Rio Road East, turn onto Belvedere Drive (located just east of the railroad tracks). Go through two roundabouts, the first of which has new homes near it. Continue straight ahead on a gravel road until you see a dirt road going downhill to the RIGHT. If you’re in a car, turn and park here. Walk down the dirt road to a clump of huge oak trees. Near the oaks, to the RIGHT, there’s a trail that leads to the trails in the Dunlora neighborhood that we built on National Trails Day 2008. STRAIGHT AHEAD is the new trail that is part of the new Belvedere development. This trail goes downhill, bends left to the north, follows the edge of fields and forest, crosses a small stream, and continues through forest with views of the Rivanna River all the way to a high railroad trestle. We do NOT have permission to cross under the tracks or to walk beyond them. Please stay on the trail, and respect the rights of private landowners.

The RTF gives a big thanks to Stonehaus Builders for their cooperation and dedication to trails as an important community resource.
