Rivanna Trails

Events

Trail maintenance work parties occur the second Saturday of each month from 9:00-12:00.

Our gathering point for work parties is at the RTF equipment shed at 2030 Morton Drive, near the Meadowcreek Gardens and behind Bodo's and the English Inn (see map). We usually meet at the tool shed at 8:45 and carpool to the work site, but contact the work party leader if you want to go directly to the project or plan on being late.

We have tools, but bring shears or clippers if you have them. Everyone is welcome! We are happy to have groups participate in our work parties, but please contact us ahead of time so that we can plan accordingly.

General questions? Contact Jeff Wilbur at klondike4@aol.com.

In honor of National Trails Day, we're offering a special spring Loop de Ville.
    • Approximate distance: ~ 19 miles.
    • Approximate hiking time: approximately 8 hours. This is variable due to rest stops and hiking speeds. We are not out to set any time record, but keep a steady pace.
    • We hike around the City in counterclockwise direction, using road walks and detours where necessary. We will have some rock-hops across streams, so participants may want to bring a pair of water-safe shoes or sandals.
    • Start: Riverview Park is located at the eastern end of Chesapeake Street. We leave promptly at 6:30 AM.
    • What to bring: boots or sturdy shoes; clothes appropriate for “urban wilderness” hiking and for weather conditions; stream crossing shoes or sandals; water; snacks; personal needs.
    • Important note: This is a strenuous hike--not technically difficult, but it's a long day. Be sure you build up your endurance and break in your boots before hike day.
    • By registering for this hike, you:

    • Acknowledge having read the above hike description.
    • Acknowledge inherent risks, hazards, and dangers of this activity.
    • ŸAssume and accept any and all risks associated with participation.
    • ŸAttest that your physical and mental health are adequate for safe participation.
    • How to participate: No cost. Just register so we’ll know to expect you.
    • We'll send out final details to registrants the week before the hike.
    • 01 Jun 2019
    • 9:00 AM - 2:00 PM
    • Starts at the IX Art Park

In addition to the Loop de Ville hike, we're celebrating National Trails Day with a guided bike ride around the Rivanna Trail loop. Meet at the IX parking lot at 9:00 AM; then ride to Jordan Park to begin the loop. We can stop at Bodo's on Emmet St. for an early lunch, and finish with refreshments at one of the establishments in the IX area.

The Rivanna Trail loop is approximately 18 miles of riding with ~1200 feet of climbing. Most of it is singletrack through urban greenery with one 2-3 mile street ride section. It is mostly beginner/intermediate friendly, but be prepared for getting your feet wet at stream crossings, and encountering vegetation along the trail, and occasionally pushing your bike. The ride should take 4-5 hours depending on the group. This is a no-drop ride.

Please bring water, snacks, a spare tube, and tools, etc. Please contact John Lewis at jnlewis@arachnerd.com if you have any questions, and if you intend to join so we can get a handle of numbers.
